Warm Weather Tips for a Great Garden

As the weather warms, spring rains fall, and the lawn and garden come out of dormancy; it's the perfect time to tackle yard maintenance tasks in preparation for the summer months.

Correct preparation during spring will make for a much more enjoyable summer in the backyard.

Some key tasks for spring include:

1. Trimming and Renovating Hedges and Lawns

With warmer weather and rain, with plenty of opportunity for new growth, spring is an ideal time to cut back hedges. Cutting the hedge back in spring will encourage new growth, thickening the hedge and ensuring it is shaped correctly coming in to summer.

A lawn renovation in spring will have the same effect. Dethatching, scalping, aerating and top dressing are all commonly done during the spring, before the worst of the summer heat. A renovation will encourage new, thicker, healthier growth and reduce the risk of fungal issues in warmer weather.

2. Bushfire and Storm Preparation

With summer in Australia comes higher potential of storms and bushfires, adequate preparation can help to reduce the risk of damage. Trim overgrown and overhanging trees, and remove dead or damaged limbs which may be likely to break off in a storm. If you have rooftop solar, also be mindful of how shadows from your trees may be effecting the efficiency your solar panels.

Removing leaves and debris from rain gutters is an impoirtant step to reduce the risk of fire from travelling embers. The ECHO rain gutter kit is an ideal way to clean gutters without the use of ladders, and without climbing on the roof.

3.Weed and Pest Management

Spring is the perfect time to take pre-emptive action against weeds and pests which may cause damage in the warmer months. Pre-emergent treatments are available for most common weeds. Using a pre-emergent treatment means you don't need to wait for the weeds to grow in order to treat them. This minimises the risk of more weed seeds growing and being deposited in the lawn. Pests like lawn grubs can be avoided by commercially available treatments which deal with the pests before they can damage your lawn.

As always, keep an eye on your lawn and garden, checking leaf health and general condition to make sure any infestations don't take hold.

4. Edging Garden Beds and Pathways

Spring is a great time to redefine the edges of your garden beds and pathways using a trimmer or edger. Clean, well defined edges enhance the overall appearance of your yard and help keep grass from invading your flower beds.

Around walkways: Use the trimmer to clear grass and debris from the edges of paths and driveways, giving your landscape a crisp, well maintained look.

Garden beds: Create neat borders between your lawn and garden beds by cutting away overgrown grass and weeds.
